Hey fellow New Yorker! I couldn't agree with you more. There are so many incredible international films out there if we're just willing to read some subtitles. I'll admit that I watch fewer than would be ideal, but that's in large part because my partner is vision-impaired and really just can't do subtitles, so they have to be me-time movies. Ah well.
